ROUEN (76) : Show “La Cathédrale, de Monet aux pixels”
Rouen is preparing itself for an illuminating summer! Every evening at dusk throughout the summer, the cathedral square will become a theatre of light. As part of this unique project, initiated by Rouen’s town authority and in particular its Heritage and Tourism Department, the cathedral’s majestic gothic façade will be turned into a massive canvas via an impressive light show which recreates the colours and angles inspired by Claude Monet’s famous series of paintings of the cathedral.
Throughout 1892 and 1893, the Impressionist artist set up his easel in front of Rouen cathedral and made tireless attempts, day after day, to capture the nuances and variations of light at different times of the day and in varying weather conditions. His efforts resulted in a body of work which is a unique part of art history, comprising of thirty completely different canvases depicting the same subject. American artist Roy Lichtenstein created a pop art version in the 20th C.
Today, the designers from Skertzo have developed the concept further by using light projectors to paint the façade of the cathedral in changing colours. Spectators are able to see a copy of the original paintings projected onto a large easel set on cathedral square, giving them a reference point with which to compare the two masterpieces.
The visual production is designed to be looked at from different angles just as in the artist’s original concept, and is accompanied by a soundtrack.
New technological advances have enabled the engineers involved in the project to give the audience a completely novel experience, using ingenious techniques which are equal in stature to the gothic building itself.
